공붓벌레, 사이시옷을 기억하세요! 

공붓벌레는 익숙한 단어이면서도 참 이상한 단어죠?
공부에 왜 벌레를 붙이고 왜 공부가 아닌 공붓벌레라고 쓰는 것일까요?
공부벌레가 맞는 단어라고 말씀하시는 분 계신가요?
사실 저도 공붓벌레는 조금 생경합니다. 
머리로는 공붓벌레가 맞다고 생각하면서도 공부벌레라고 인지하고 있답니다.
어쨌든! 그러나! 국립국어원이 표준어라고 정한 것은 공부벌레가 아닌 '공붓벌레'라는 것입니다.

명사와 명사 사이에 사이시옷이 생기는 경우는 여러 가지가 있습니다.
국립국어원 홈페이지에 들어가 사이시옷을 검색해 보면 무려 620여가지 질문이 나옵니다.
이번에는 왜 공부+벌레의 경우 사이시옷이 생기는지 살펴보도록 하겠습니다. 

순우리말+순우리말 혹은 순우리말+한자어와 같은 합성어에서 앞말이 모음으로 끝나 뒷말의 첫소리가 된소리로 발음될 때 사이시옷을 넣습니다.

'공부+벌레'가 합쳐지면서 벌레의 '벌'이 된소리 '뻘'로 발음됩니다.
공부벌레라고 발음하는 것이 아니라 공붓뻘레라고 발음하게 된다는 것이죠.
그렇기 때문에 사이시옷이 들어가는 것입니다.

공붓벌레 is a familiar but strange word, right? 
Why do you think that "공붓벌레" is right word and "공부벌레" is wrong?
Actually, I feel unfamiliar with "공붓벌레".
Anyway, however, the National Institute of Korean Language has decided "공붓벌레" as the standard word, not "공부벌레".

There becomes 사이시옷 when the front word ends with a vowel and the last word is pronounced as tense sound 
in compound words such as pure Korean + pure Korean or pure Korean + Chinese characters, 

As the two nouns "study + bug" are combined, the last word is pronounced as "뻘", not "벌." 
That is, it's pronounced as 공붓뻘레" and that's why there becomes 사이시옷 between the two words.
