수필을 좋아하시나요?
저는 수필 읽는 것을 참 좋아합니다. 
수필은 일상생활을 담담하고 느리게 흐르는 강물처럼 풀어 내 저의 일상을 반추해 보게 하는 힘을 가지고 있죠.
수필은 형식 없이 자유롭게 일상을 쓰는 것이기 때문에 어떤 문학보다 소재가 자유로우며, 정치·문화·역사에 이르기까지 다양한 주제로 글을 쓸 수 있다는 장점이 있습니다.  
다만, 프랑스의 문학 평론가인 르네 마릴 알베레스(René Marill Albérès)는 "수필은 지성을 기반으로 한 정서적·신비적인 이미지로 쓰여진 것"이어야 한다고 말했습니다.

있었던 일을 늘어놓기만 한다면 일기 정도에 지나지 않게 되는 것이죠. 
문학작품인 수필과 일기는 분명 차이가 있으니까요. 

자, 이제 맞춤법 퀴즈 시간입니다!

'수필난'이 맞을까요, '수필란'이 맞을까요?

정답은 '수필란'입니다!

'수필란'은 책이나 잡지, 신문 같은 지면에 수필을 싣는 난을 말합니다.
여기에서 왜 '수필란', '수필을 싣는 난'이라고 했을까요?
둘 다 의미는 같습니다만 역시 우리의 복잡한 맞춤법 규칙 때문입니다. 

한자어 뒤에는 언제나 '-란'이 옵니다. 그래서 '수필란, 투고란, 공란, 답란' 등으로 적습니다.
그러나 고유어, 외래어가 앞에 올 때 두음법칙이 적용돼 '-난'이 됩니다. '스포츠난, 에세이난, 가십난, 어린이난'으로 표기해야겠죠?

알고 보면 간단하지만, 또 어떻게 보면 어렵다는 것!

Essays have the power to make me reflect on my daily life because they unravel authors' daily lives like a calm, slowly flowing river.
Essays are writings about everyday life without any forms, the subject can be very diverse than any other literature, so we can write on various topics ranging from politics, culture, to history.

However, French literary critic René Marill Albérès said, "The essay should be written in an emotional and mystical image based on intelligence."
It's just a diary if you only write about what happened.
There's definitely a difference between a literary essay and a diary.

Now, it's orthography quiz time!

Which one is correct? "수필난" or "수필란"?

The answer is "수필란"!

"수필란" refers to a column in which essays are placed on pages such as books, magazines, and newspapers.
Why is "수필란" correct and "수필난" wrong? 
It is because of our complicated spelling rules.

Chinese characters always have to be followed by "-란", so we have to write down like "수필란, 투고란, 공란, 답란" and so on.
However, when native or foreign words come before "란", it should become "난",  because of the initial law(두음법칙). Therefore, we have to write down like "스포츠난 에세이난, 가십난, 어린이난." 

It's simple when you know it, but in a way, it's difficult, right?
